Q. How often do
Scouts meet?
A. In our
Bremen Pack, boys meet in their Dens (a group of boys in their grade) 2-3 times
per month from September – March. We
also have at least one brief Family Outing/Function per month, usually on a
Saturday.
Q. Where do the Cub Scouts meet?
A. The
Den Meetings take place at Bremen United
Methodist Church
STUDENT CENTER, 323
N. Montgomery Street on Monday nights from 6:45
– 8:00 PM. Consult the Pack Calendar for
exact dates.
Q. What is the purpose of Cub Scouting?
A.
Character Development, Spiritual Growth, Good Citizenship, Sportsmanship
and Fitness, Family Understanding, Respectful Relationships, Personal
Achievement, Friendly Service, Fun and Adventure, Preparation for Boy Scouts.
Q. What do Cub Scouts do at Den Meetings?
A. Have FUN and learn new things! Cub
Scouts learn skills to suit their age.
Den Leaders follow the Handbook, and focus on different purpose-focused achievements
toward advancement as they select activities for each meeting. Meeting activities usually involve hands-on
projects/crafts, games, visits from community professionals and other learning
activities. Occasionally a den will have
the opportunity to go on short close-proximity field trips as well (you will
always be notified and required to sign permission to such trips in advance).
Q. Are
parents supposed to attend Den Meetings?
A. All
parents should attend the opening announcements at the start of each Den
Meeting in the downstairs fellowship hall at 6:45. After announcements, the Dens are dismissed
to their various meeting rooms throughout the building, at which time parents
may leave. However, 1st graders (Tiger Cubs) must always be accompanied by a parent or other adult helper
for the entire meeting/function. For
scouts in 2nd – 5th grade, den meetings are intended to
be an activity for the individual boys. However, if you would like to take an
active part in the meetings, your assistance is welcomed and appreciated! Talk to the Cubmaster about ways you can help. It takes parent leadership to make the Pack
go!
Q. How much does it cost to be in Cub Scouts?
A. There
is minimal cost.
- If you were not in Cub Scouts during the previous school year,
there is a registration fee of $30. With active membership, the boys’
subsequent-years registrations are paid annually out of the Pack funds
(generated by Popcorn Sales).
- Boys in their 2nd consecutive year and beyond receive
a free annual subscription to Boy’s Life Magazine, which is an excellent
resource! If you desire for your
son to receive a subscription to Boy’s Life in his 1st year – it
can be purchased a discounted rate of $12.
This can be accomplished by filling-in the Boy’s Life bubble on
your son’s registration form at sign-up.
- Parents will need to
acquire a shirt for their son. The
blue Cub Scout (short-sleeved) shirt retails for $22.99. Buy it
loose! He will wear it for at least
3 years! Short sleeved shirts are
more versatile because they will be worn all year round. Thrift stores such as Goodwill and
Salvation Army sometimes have used Cub Scout shirts at approximately $3. The Pack also sometimes has access to
used shirts – check with your leader or Cubmaster for information on used
shirts.
- There will be occasional
minimal costs associated with optional
special events. For example, Scouts
may occasionally have the opportunity to attend a Notre Dame sporting
event at a much discounted rate.
Or, a camping outing may have a small cost involved. These events are of course optional, and
usually involve minimal cost.
Q. What other supplies
and equipment are needed to participate in Scouting?
A. At
one of the meetings this month, your son will receive (these are covered by
your registration fee):
- A Handbook (Tiger
Book=1st Grade |
Wolf Book=2nd Grade |
Bear Book=3rd Grade | Webelos Book=4th & 5th Grade)
Q. Where
are the retail locations to purchase new Cub Scout shirts?
·
Locally,
uniforms are available at Kabelin True Value in Plymouth (call ahead for
availability 936-2233) and also at the LaSalle Council Boy Scouts of America
office/store; located at Morris - 1st Source Scout Center, 1340 South Bend
Ave. (SR 23) South Bend, IN 46617.
Q. How will I know what is going on in Cub
Scouts?
A. Good
communication with parents is a very high priority in our Pack.
- In our effort to Go Green, saving money and natural
resource; all information is now digital.
- Our Website – Everything you need to know can be found
there! www.bremenpack256.org
Be
sure to check the website frequently for calendar and events updates!
- The Pack publishes a Newsletter every month. These can also be found on our website,
in the Newsletter link. We also
email the newsletter to every member who has registered email with the
Pack. If you do not have an email
address, a hard copy can be made available upon request, and you can pick
it up from the Cubmaster prior to announcements at the Den Meetings.
- We encourage a parent to stay and listen to the 5 minute
Opening/Announcement period at the start of each Den Meeting. This takes place in the lower-level
fellowship hall before Den’s are dismissed to their assigned meeting room
throughout the building.
- Please provide all current
email addresses for whom you wish to receive Cub Scout related emails. Email the pack secretary at cubscoutpack256@live.com to
make sure we have your email on file.
Email notifications and
reminders are sent regularly to all those with email addresses on file.
Q. What is expected of parents?
A. Cub Scouting is
a family organization, and must have parent participation to
succeed.
- Most
advancement requirements are done at home with family. Take interest in your child’s goals for
Cub Scouting and help him achieve those goals.
- Find a way to help the Pack. It takes every parent,
pooling talents and resources to give the boys a great Cub Scouting
experience. Fill out the “Where Can
I Help” sheet in your Welcome Packet and return it to the Cubmaster as
soon as possible.
- KNOW THIS: Getting involved expresses LOVE to your
child, builds CHILDHOOD MEMORIES for him, strengthens his CHARACTER,
strengthens your FAMILY as a whole, provides a positive ROLE MODEL for
him, and provides a means for COMMUNITY SERVICE - making our community a better place in which to
live!
